L-R: The many incarnations of the football dress: Geoffrey Beene Evening Dress, 1968; Marc Jacobs Jersey Dress, Spring/Summer 2008; and T by Alexander Wang Jersey Dress, Spring/Summer 2014
“"One of my greatest pleasures has been to take jersey and men’s fabrics into the ballroom,” said the late fashion designer Geoffrey Beene (1924 - 2004). A fashion innovator who believed that clothing should be comfortable, Beene humorously introduced sportswear for eveningwear in 1967, when he unveiled his sequined football jersey dress. The famed design has been reimagined countless times over the years, from Marc Jacob's body-skimming rendition for Spring/Summer 2008 to Alexander Wang's numberless, short-sleeve sack for his 2014 T line ($200.00, Saks.com). With Super Bowl XLVIII fast approaching, Beene's design (and its re-takes) seem more apropros than ever.
