When you think "luxurious loungewear," you may think of the Juicy Couture craze of the early 2000s. But it was actually New York-based designer Norma Kamali who put gym clothes on fashion's map in the 1970s and 1980s. Once hailed a "fashion world MacGyver" by The New York Times, Kamali's first collections consisted of high-fashion styles made from down-market materials, most notably crewneck tops, full skirts, and tunics made from sweatshirt fabric.
This season, elegant crewneck sweatshirts à la Kamali are again the rage. Although the trend wasn't enough to save Juicy Couture from being turned into a discount label, extremely elegant crewnecks, rendered in plush fabrics with eye-catching embellishments, have pervaded designer collections and fast fashion retailers alike. (I picked mine up at Old Navy, though the style has since sold out.)
