Anna Wintour's first Vogue cover ran in November 1988. Shot by Peter Lindbergh, the cover featured model Michaela Bercu wearing faded jeans with a $10,000 Christian Lacroix jeweled jacket. Never before had a Vogue cover model appeared in jeans nor had a Vogue editor ever featured inexpensive clothes with couture in a spread. Today, Wintour's styling method is the norm, with most fashion-minded folk mixing casual and formal, affordable and luxury clothes and accessories to create their day-to-day looks.
Although I was a wee toddler, I remember this cover well. (Did I understand it's significance at the time? No. But what child isn't entranced by shiny jewels?) In fact, it's one of my favorites. Imagine my delight when I saw that embellished tops are back in style this fall. (Yay!) I especially love the jeweled sweatshirt trend -- the embodiment of high/low style in my humble opinion -- like J. Crew's jeweled chandelier sweatshirt ($168.00). Paired with jeans (à la Vogue) or a pencil skirt and blouse, it's my fall fashion must have.
