Organic Jewelry

When I was twelve-years-old, I heard Marilyn Monroe croon that "diamonds are a girls best friend." With the recent economic downturn, though, many ladies (myself and Lynnie included) anticipated remaining quite friendless for the time being. Fortunately, S.S.W. has found a few soft, organically-inspired pieces by up-and-coming designers that are the ideal shift away from traditional hard, cold stones.

Zoemou, by Australian designer Zoe Sernack, is a line of naturally-shaped, laser-cut leather necklaces. Sernack's line is inspired by the 1920s Parisian art noveau, which is known for its sineous curves. I was captivated by her Large Wreath necklace (left), which can be worn in a variety of ways around the neck. And, for $90, you don't have to break your almost-empty piggy bank to secure this fantastic find.

Also among the new-and-noteworthy is Nervous System by MIT grads Jessica Rosenkrantz and Jesse Louis-Rosenberg. Founded in 2007, their jewelry line is inspired by the "natural forms and corresponding processes which construct the world around us." Their collections are named accordingly - Dendrite, Algae, Radiolaria, and Lamina - and their pieces are made from a variety of less-than-precious materials, such as silicone, rubber, and stainless steel. Their website also features a Play and Learn section, where users can play with particle systems to create their own unique pieces of jewelry. I swooned for their Orchid necklace (right, $105), which was inspired, of course, by the flower of the same name.

With fab finds like these, we're happy to proclaim that there's nothing quite like making new friends.
